Art is not confined to galleries, nor is it always materialized as an exhibition. Artistic practice should reach beyond those spaces, transpired in various forms and played by different communities
The Jakarta Biennale is open to these possibilities. Through the program Roadshow Art on the Spot (RAOS), the Jakarta Biennale 2015 tries to embrace the crowd and touch the spaces they inhabit. The program is a collaboration between the Jakarta Biennale and Komplotan Jakarta 32oC, Berakar Komunikasi and Koalisi Seni Indonesia.
With the theme ‘Life is Art’, RAOS visited ten universities and ten public spaces in Jakarta from August 19 to the end of October 2015. At each location, the RAOS team invited a number of young artists to organize activities with local residents and communities.
The activities were varied, but all of them involved art creation processes, from drawing workshops, photography, graffiti making, puppet making, to collage and mask creation. Apart from introducing the Jakarta Biennale to a wider public, these activities aimed to build and bridge the communication about art in daily lives. Anyone could participate in it.
The artworks produced in RAOS are exhibited during the Jakarta Biennale 2015, inside a special gallery at Gedung Sarinah, Pancoran. From the public, for the public.
